Safety & Standards

Safety is built into every Jolt charger at the hardware level — the charge controller enforces these interlocks independently of the network or app, and a fault always takes the charger to a safe state.

  • Type B RCD — residual-current protection detecting 30 mA AC and 6 mA DC leakage.
  • Continuous earth (PE) monitoring — the charger checks protective-earth integrity before and during a session.
  • CP diode detection — verifies a valid vehicle control-pilot circuit before energising.
  • Emergency stop — optional hardware e-stop.
  • Over/under-voltage — protection above 275 V AC with automatic recovery.
  • Over-current — software-controlled limiting in the charger; an external MCB is fitted during installation.
  • Surge protection — differential mode ±3 kV, common mode ±6 kV.
  • ESD — air discharge ±8 kV, contact discharge ±4 kV.
  • EFT — ±4 kV.

Rather than cutting a charge off abruptly, a Jolt charger derates — it lowers the delivered current to stay within safe limits, and only pauses charging if it has to.

  • Voltage derating. The charger enforces a maximum apparent-power (VA) limit to protect its internal electronics. Because power = voltage × current, the current it allows scales with the supply voltage: as voltage rises, the charger trims current to keep power under that limit.
  • Temperature derating. As the charger’s internal temperature climbs toward its limit, it progressively reduces the maximum current to shed heat. If temperature keeps rising past the safe threshold, it pauses the session (signalled as a Temperature fault — see LED status) and resumes automatically once the unit cools.

Example. A 7.4 kW unit is delivering 32 A at 230 V (≈ 7.4 kVA):

  • If the site voltage rises to 250 V, holding the same power budget means the charger reduces current to about 30 A (7.4 kVA ÷ 250 V) — voltage derating.
  • If, on a hot afternoon, the internal temperature crosses its threshold, the charger steps current down — for example 32 A → 24 A → 16 A — to keep cooling; if it still climbs, it pauses charging until the unit cools, then ramps back up.
